Natural Ventilation, Thermal Envelope

Fórum Barreiro is a naturally ventilated shopping center, organized around two covered streets and two squares under timber and glass roofs. Natural Works carried out solar analysis and thermal simulations. After the center opened in 2008, Natural Works used CFD and coupled thermal and airflow simulation to redesign the ventilation openings, solving the winter discomfort caused by cold drafts with only a limited temperature rise in summer. The work was published in Energy and Buildings (2012). Architectural solutions developed with Broadway Malyan.
